Report: Tottenham face blow in Nicolo Zaniolo pursuit after Roma U-turn

The Evening Standard have revealed that AS Roma have cooled their interest in selling Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo this summer.

The speculation linking Zaniolo with a move to Spurs had been growing steadily over recent weeks, with The Daily Express even claiming a couple of days ago that Antonio Conte’s men were ‘cautiously optimistic’ about snapping up the winger.

Corriere dello Sport revealed on Wednesday that Tottenham had struck an agreement with Roma regarding the 23-year-old last week but Jose Mourinho stepped in to block the transfer.

The report stated that the former Spurs boss convinced the Italy international to stay at the Stadio Olimpico for one more season.

If The Evening Standard’s latest update is to be believed, the Lilywhites have now suffered a blow in their pursuit of Zaniolo.

The report claims that the Giallorossi had initially offered Spurs the chance to sign the winger but the Italian club have now changed their mind and will keep him at the club.

While this does come as a blow for Spurs, it was evident from the start that Zaniolo was more of a luxury target than a necessity for the North London club. I still expect us to make one attacking addition before the window closes and it will be interesting to see who we go for.
