Report: Tottenham failed with attempt to sign 26-year-old in January

Sport have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur made an attempt to sign Franck Kessie in January but the midfielder turned down the chance to move to the North London club.

Kessie has struggled for game time since joining Barcelona on a free transfer last summer and multiple publications reported during last month’s transfer window that Spurs had made contact with the player’s entourage regarding a potential transfer (TuttoMercatoWeb).

Sport have now confirmed that not only Tottenham but also the midfielder’s former club, AC Milan, made attempts to snap up the Barca star last month owing to his lack of minutes at the Camp Nou.

The report states that the two clubs ‘probed’ for Kessie but the Ivorian never thought about leaving the Catalan giants ‘for a minute’ as his dream remains to succeed at the club.

It is explained that the 26-year-old was convinced that he would get opportunities to prove himself at Camp Nou ‘sooner or later’ and that Xavi Hernandez was happy for him to stay.

I suspect Tottenham’s initial plan was to sign a midfielder of Kessie’s or Weston McKennie’s mould in January and loan out Pape Matar Sarr. However, Sarr’s impressive displays last month against Palace, Portsmouth and Arsenal, might have got Conte to change his mind.
