Report: Tottenham fans banned from Marseille city centre ahead of CL clash

According to a report from L’Equipe, Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been banned from entering Marseille’s city centre ahead of the Champions League clash later tonight.

Spurs currently sit at the top of Group D in the Champions Leauge, but the North London side must pick up a point away at Marseille to guarantee a place in the knockout stages of this year’s competition.

In the previous meeting between these two sides at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs eventually took all three points after two headed goals from Richarlison late on sealed the win.

The game was marred by off-the-field events though, as fans and stewards clashed before, during, and after the match. Five arrests were made after the game for offences including affray, drunk and disorderly behaviour, and possession of a weapon (Evening Standard).

Now, as Tottenham fans travel to France to watch the all-important fixture, limitations have been placed on the surrounding area in the build-up to the game. Tottenham supporters will not be permitted to enter Marseille’s city centre at all today.

According to the report, a decree from the police of Bouches-du-Rhône has been issued which refers to “any person claiming to be a Tottenham supporter or behaving as such”, indicating they cannot enter the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th subdivisions of Marseille.

Spurs fans will be escorted to the Stade Velodrome on supervised transport, and no English supporter is permitted near the stadium and in an entire sector around the stadium between 10 a.m. and midnight on Tuesday, November 1.

After the trouble surrounding the last meeting between Spurs and Marseille, it’s no surprise really that limitations have been put in place. The safety of everyone involved has to take priority, and with this in mind, it’s good to see that the French police have put these measures into effect.
