Report: Tottenham have competition from a PL rival for Jean-Clair Todibo

The race to sign Jean-Clair Todibo is heating up, and it seems Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United will be the ones to fight it out to sign the Frenchman next month.

It is no secret that Tottenham are desperate to sign a new centre-back in January. Ange Postecoglou even admitted as much in his press conference at the weekend (Football.London).

The injury sustained by Micky van de Ven at the start of last month has left the Spurs backline heavily exposed. Despite the best efforts of Ben Davies, it’s clear that the Lilywhites need further depth at the back.

So, with January fast approaching, various names are being bandied around in relation to a move to North London, with Jean-Clair Todibo becoming more and more prominent of late.

Who’s wining the race for Jean-Clair Todibo?

It was previously believed Manchester United were leading the race to sign the French centre-half (Football Insider). But now, the latest from Nice-Matin (via Sport Witness) claims Todibo is being courted more closely by Spurs and Newcastle.

The report suggests Todibo is being “closely watched” by the two Premier League rivals ahead of a potential move to England next month, with both sides eager to add to their defensive roster.

While there is still interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, too, it is Spurs who have seemingly made the latest step forward, with the Daily Mail claiming the Lilywhites have held ‘further talks’ with the player’s camp.

We can’t let any of these clubs beat us to the signing of Todibo. He is seemingly our top target (and rightly so), so we should arrange the move swiftly to get us in a good place throughout January and beyond. Then, when van de Ven is back, we will have three top class centre-halves fighting for a place in the team.
