Report: Tottenham have launched an opening bid for Barcelona star

Journalist Alfredo Martinez has told Radioestadio Noche that Tottenham Hotspur have now submitted a bid to Barcelona for Franck Kessie.

Kessie joined Barca on a free transfer back in the summer after his contract with AC Milan ran out but the midfielder’s time at Camp Nou has not gone according to plan so far.

The Ivory Coast international has only made seven league appearances for the club this season, coming on as a late substitute for most of them (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham’s interest in Kessie first came to light at the start of December when AS reported that the North London club were exploring a move for the 26-year-old, who was alleged to be valued at just €10m (£8.5m) by Barcelona.

Since then, multiple reports (Sport and GiveMeSport) have suggested that the former Milan man still dreams of being successful at the Catalan club and has no intention of leaving in January.

However, if Martinez’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs have now launched an opening offer for Kessie to test Barca’s resolve. The journalist claims that Antonio Conte’s men have submitted an offer of €15m (£13.2m) for the midfielder.

We need to wait and see if this claim is backed up by other outlets as Martinez is the only one who has reported on this offer from Tottenham. If it is true, one would expect Barca to be tempted to get the Ivorian’s salary off their wage bill, given the club’s financial issues.
