Report: Tottenham have ‘upper hand’ over Chelsea in race to sign winger

The Portuguese press are running reports that both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are chasing the signature of Sporting Lisbon winger Marcus Edwards. However, it is thought Spurs hold the advantage, thanks to a sell-on clause in the player’s contract.

Marcus Edwards began his career at Tottenham, but made just one senior appearance for the club (Transfermarkt) before being sold to Vitória Guimarães SC in 2019.

Since then, the English attacker earned a move to Portuguese giants, Sporting, and has become one of the most highly-coveted players across Europe.

Last season, Edwards bagged 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions for his club (Transfermarkt), including a goal against his former club, Tottenham, in the Champions League.

His displays had led to Spurs being linked with a move for the 24-year-old in January, but nothing came to fruition on that front.

The North London side did hold a 50% sell-on clause in the deal which saw Edwards leave, but they gave up 15% of that during negotiations to sign Pedro Porro (Fabrizio Romano).

Spurs are keen on Marcus Edwards again

Now, with the player continuing his great form, it seems Spurs are circling once more. That’s according to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã, who claim Ange Postecoglou‘s side are looking at a move for Edwards, and it seems they face competition from rivals Chelsea.

The two London clubs are thought to be “leading the way” when it comes to the race to sign Edwards. However, it is said Spurs have the “upper hand” due to the fact he used to play for them, and that sell-on clause in his contract.

Edwards’ recent performances have “not gone unnoticed” by the Premier League sides. But, it is believed Sporting would also be willing to reward him with a new contract, one which would raise his release clause from €60m to €80m (£52.1m-£69.6m).

Spurs Web Opinion

I really like the look of Edwards whenever I see him play, and he feels like he would fit this Ange-ball system wonderfully. He’s quick, strong, has bags of flair, and you’d hope he would be keen to come back to his boyhood club and prove how far he has come.
