Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly hijacked Arsenal’s bid to sign a highly-rated 18-year-old central defender this summer, right at the last minute.
The Guardian report that Arsenal had already agreed terms with the youngster for a five-year contract, and the club were only minor details away from agreeing a deal with St Etienne.
However, Spurs have now swooped in and offered a better deal than their North London rivals, offering something in the region of €30 for the player’s signature (RMC).
With Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both in the final year of their respective contracts, Pochettino may be looking to invest in a long-term replacement.
It is said that Tottenham have edged ahead of Arsenal in the race as they have included a rather tempting add-on in that Saliba would be allowed to spend the next season on loan at St-Etienne.
Tottenham fans will love this, as it comes just a day after Arsenal centre-back and captain, Laurent Koscielny, refused to join the squad on their pre-season tour (BBC).
Negotiations between Arsenal, Saint Etienne and Saliba were in their very final stages – much of it already in the hands of lawyers to agree wording of contracts etc – but Tottenham have reignited their interest and are now pushing hard to get the deal completed #AFC #THFC #ASSE https://t.co/8uihItY3eS
