Report: Tottenham hold ‘positive talks’ to extend 25-year-old’s contract

Tottenham Hotspur’s third-choice goalkeeper, Brandon Austin, looks set to sign a new contract with the club, as a report from Football.London indicates ‘positive talks’ have taken place this week.

Austin is a product of the Spurs academy, but has seen his path to the first team blocked by Hugo Lloris and now Guglielmo Vicario.

The 25-year-old is still waiting to make his competitive debut for the Lilywhites, but he has been on the bench for the club many times in his career.

Those substitute involvements have been steady over the last few months, too. With Fraser Forster out injured, Austin has been promoted to Tottenham’s second-choice goalkeeper.

Austin’s contract with Tottenham expires at the end of this season, and there had been doubts as to whether he would be retained beyond this summer. Indeed, just a month ago, Football Insider claimed the keeper was ‘fighting to save his career’ in North London.

Brandon Austin may have a future at Spurs after all

But now, things are looking up for Austin as the latest from Football.London suggests the club are making progress with discussions to extend his stay at Spurs.

The report states that Austin’s 33 appearances on the Spurs bench in the last two seasons have seen his stock rise, and “positive talks” have taken place regarding an extension on his current deal.

It is suggested that Tottenham’s impending involvement in European football has led to an “issue with a lack of club-trained homegrown players,” and retaining Austin could well be a solution to this situation.

Keeping hold of Austin makes perfect sense really. We need him when it comes to our homegrown quota, and he’s not a bad deputy to have on the books when it comes to providing cover in the goalkeeper position.
