Report: Tottenham hopeful of agreeing new contract with Belgian defender

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly hopeful that they can agree a new contract with Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen this summer.

Football London report that Spurs do not want to lose one of their most experienced and talented players on a free in 2020, with Vertonghen having just one year left on his contract.

The Times also claim that Jan himself is keen to stay in North London and sign a new deal, so it appears this one may just be a matter of time.

Vertonghen was left to watch the season opener from the stands on Saturday as Tottenham welcomed Aston Villa to their new stadium.

Although the centre-back wasn’t injured, Pochettino was apparently not happy with his fitness levels upon returning from his summer break (Daily Mail).

Spurs fans will be hoping that this isn’t a lingering issue, as they have Man City away coming up and will need their best XI out there.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I would hand him a two year deal with an option to extend to a third.
