Report: Tottenham Hotspur could be set for £42.5m sponsorship windfall

New details have emerged in a report from the Daily Maverick regarding a lucrative new sponsorship opportunity between Tottenham Hotspur and South Africa Tourism.

According to the report, SA Tourism’s acting CEO, Themba Khumalo, met with Tottenham representatives on January 27, 2023 to put forward his proposal. PowerPoint presentations from the meeting have leaked which reveal key details from the proposal.

It is thought that, if successful, the deal will be announced by the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, during his State of the Nation address on 10 February, 2023. It is said that, Tottenham reached out to SA tourism way back in 2017 to discuss this opportunity and things appear to be progressing.

The prospective partnership would follow the template set by similar deals like Abu Dhabi’s sponsorship of Manchester City and Malta’s sponsorship of Manchester United. There is a growing trend of destination management organisations (DMO) using sports teams to advertise cities or countries as vacation destinations.

Rebecca Davis of the Daily Maverick said: “The presentation specifies that the total value of the sponsorship deal between SA Tourism and Tottenham Hotspur FC would be £42.5-million over three years — which converts to R910,997,814.75 in South African currency, or just under a billion rand.”

It is unclear just how likely the deal is at this stage, but the publication added: “If SA Tourism does not grab this opportunity, a competing DMO will.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It makes sense that Tottenham Hotspur would want to arrange a deal like this, given the commercial value of the club right now and the fact that our biggest rivals have similar partnerships in place already.

It’s great to see big sponsorship deals being put in place, but the key thing is that this money is invested in the right way and helps to improve the club on the pitch too.
