Report: Tottenham Hotspur reject loan offer for defender

Tottenham Hotspur have rejected an approach from Brentford to take Djed Spence on loan due to the fact their offer included a clause to sign the defender on a permanent basis, according to the Evening Standard.

Spence joined Tottenham in the summer for a deal reportedly worth up to £20 million (Sky Sports) and arrived at the club with plenty of promise after an impressive campaign with Nottingham Forest in the Championship last season in which he helped them to secure their return to the Premier League.

The 22-year-old has had a tricky time in North London, though, and has failed to establish himself in Antonio Conte’s plans. Spence has made just six appearances for Spurs so far, amounting to just 41 minutes of action (Transfermarkt).

Suffice to say, Spence’s immediate future at the club is in question, especially considering Spurs are expecting to announce the signing of Pedro Porro soon (The Sun).

It is thought Spence has a long list of admirers should Spurs look to move him on this month. Football.London suggest Brentford and Leicester are keen, while 90 Min claim West Ham, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Southampton are also interested.

The latest from Evening Standard suggests Brentford have made the first move for the young wing-back, but the offer has been knocked back by Spurs.

The report claims Spurs ‘have given the green light’ for Spence to spend the rest of the season on loan elsewhere, but ‘will insist that any deal does not include an option or obligation to buy’ the player since they don’t want to lose him permanently.

Apparently, Brentford’s offer included such a clause, with a ‘purchase obligation’ thought to be the reason why Spurs rejected the approach.

It looks highly likely Spence will move on for the rest of the season, which is fine, as he needs first team football. I would hate to see him move on permanently though, so it’s a relief to hear the club are knocking back those kind of offers.
