Report: Tottenham in advanced talks to make third summer signing for £20m

Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence, according to Football Insider.

Spurs are thought to be closing in on a deal worth around £20 million pounds to sign the 21-year-old, having ramped up their pursuit for a transfer in recent days.

Antonio Conte’s side are reportedly frontrunners in the chase for Spence with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Newcastle and Brentford and Nottingham Forest also keeping tabs (Football.London).

The move would see Spence arrive at Spurs to fight for a spot at right wing-back under Conte, who has identified the position as an area to improve on this summer (Telegraph).

Spence spent last term on loan at Forest and played a crucial role as Steve Cooper’s side secured promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-off final.

He made 50 appearances in total last term – 40 of which came in starting berths – while he featured in all of their games in the play-offs (Transfermarkt).

The England U21 international could become Tottenham’s third signing of the summer following winger Ivan Perisic and goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who arrived in North London on respective free transfers.

This would not be a bad price for someone like Spence considering he is homegrown and still has so much time to develop going forward.

It is good that Spurs are looking to make their moves early as it will allow the potential arrivals plenty of time to bed in when pre-season comes around.
