Report: Tottenham interested in midfielder who has £50m release clause

According to the print edition of Portuguese publication Record (as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes ahead of the transfer window.

Nunes has been developing steadily since his move from Estoril to Sporting back in the summer of 2019.

The midfielder established himself as a regular in the Primeira Liga giants’ starting eleven last season but his game has gone up another notch this campaign, which has seemingly attracted the interest of several suitors.

The central midfielder has also won four caps for Portugal on the back of his performances for his club.

O Jogo revealed last week that representatives from Spurs were in attendance during Sporting’s 2-2 draw against Porto last Friday but the report did not mention who the club were running the rule over.

If Record’s latest update is to be believed, Nunes might be the man the North London club were taking a close look at.

The report claims that Tottenham are one of several Premier League clubs that hold an interest in the 23-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, it is explained that the midfielder only signed a new deal with Sporting last season and he is protected by €60m (£49.9m) release clause.

It is asserted that Sporting could hold out for a fee of €50m (£41.6m) for Nunes when the transfer window reopens.

Spurs Web Opinion

Central midfield is one area that I expect Spurs to freshen up in the summer. So, I would not be surprised if the North London club were willing to listen to offers for both Hojbjerg and Winks.

Nunes fits the profile of signings Spurs tend to go for, given his age and high ceiling. However, Conte might prefer a more tried and tested option over the Portuguese youngster.
