Report: Tottenham interested in PL star currently fighting in relegation scrap

Sources at Football Insider have indicated Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a close eye on James Ward-Prowse’s situation at Southampton ahead of a potential move in the summer.

Ward-Prowse has been with Southampton his whole career, making it through their academy and youth teams to become club captain.

He has now made 392 appearances for the club, scoring 52 goals and providing 51 assists in that time (Transfermarkt).

Southampton are currently embroiled in a tight relegation battle and find themselves in 19th place in the Premier League table as things stand.

A win over Leicester City at the weekend finally lifted the Saints off the foot of the table, though all signs point to this fight going down to the wire.

That’s despite the best efforts of Ward-Prowse, who has bagged eight goals and registered three assists in all competitions for the South Coast club so far this term (Transfermarkt).

Now, it seems that Southampton’s struggles could be of great gain to Tottenham Hotspur, who are targeting Ward-Prowse in the event of the Saints being relegated to the Championship.

However, the player does have three years left on his current contract.

Regardless, the report suggests Tottenham would be keen to bring in the dynamic midfielder to add an extra element to their already strong central areas.

With Ward-Prowse continually on the peripheries of the England set-up, remaining in the Premier League would naturally benefit his prospects.

Whether Spurs can strike a deal or not remains to be seen, and would very much depend on Southampton’s final league position.

Spurs Web Opinion

I think James Ward-Prowse would be a fantastic acquisition for us and we could really make the most of his set-piece abilities too.

He might not be quite the playmaker we are thought to be looking for, but he is supremely creative and a model professional, so we could do much worse than signing such a player.
