Report: Tottenham leading the race for 22-year-old defensive midfielder

According to the latest reports from Italy, Tottenham are the prime contenders to land Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara when the transfer window opens in the summer.

Diawara has been a long-term target for Tottenham, having been linked with a move to the club as far back as a year-and-a-half ago when he was still at Napoli (CalcioMercato).

The 22-year-old completed a £19million move to Roma last summer but things have not gone according to plan for the youngster in his first season at the Stadio Olimpico, making just 17 starts in what has been a season interrupted by injury problems.

TuttotMercatoWeb reported in January that Spurs had sent scouts to Italy watch the midfielder in action.

Corriere dello Sport (as relayed Sport Witness) now reveal that Roma are ready to move Diawara on this summer, with several Premier League clubs said to be showing an interest.

The report reveals that Spurs are the keenest on securing the Guinean international’s signature. It is suggested that Roma will be looking to recoup as much of the £19m they paid for Diawara last summer, as possible.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is not particularly surprising to see us being linked with many defensive midfielders this summer. A ball winner in midfield is certainly a priority, especially with Dier seemingly moved to centre-back permanently. Sissoko’s performances in the first couple of games have shown how much we have missed someone with a physical presence in the middle of the park shielding the back four. If the Frenchman were to get injured again, we would be in major trouble as we have no one else capable of doing a similar job.
