Report: Dutch centre-back linked with Tottenham rejects contract extension

Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, has rejected the Nerazzurri’s latest contract offer, TuttoMercatoWeb have revealed.

Alessandro Bastoni was reportedly Tottenham’s first choice target for the left centre-back role (Football Insider) but his agent confirmed today that he would be staying at Inter Milan (Matteo Moretto).

However, his Inter teammate De Vrij, who has thrived in the middle of the back three for the last two years, has also been linked with a move to the North London club.

It was reported back in March (Inter Live) that Antonio Conte was keen on reuniting with the former Lazio star, who has just 12 months left to run on his contract at the San Siro (Transfermarkt).

Football Insider claimed last month that Spurs were battling Aston Villa for the Netherlands international’s signature, with Simone Inzaghi’s side said to value the experienced defender at around £15m.

TMW have now revealed that Inter offered De Vrij a 12-month extension to his deal that would have seen the centre-back commit his future to the club until 2024.

However, the Dutchman allegedly turned down the offer since he was not happy with the terms of the proposal.

The report asserts that the Serie A club could now cash in on De Vrij if they receive an offer of around €10m (£8.5m) for the player this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Joe Rodon does leave this summer, Spurs will lack a natural cover for Eric Dier in the central sweeper role for next season. De Vrij is proven in that role and understands Conte’s system well and so a move for the Dutchman would make sense for Spurs, particularly if he is available for a cut-price fee.
