Report: Tottenham make contact with European club for defensive midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in Sporting midfielder Joao Palhinha, according to Portuguese news outlet Record.

Interest in the 25-year-old has said to have increased following his second performance for Portugal against France during the Group F clash at Euro 2020 with Everton, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla also monitoring his situation.

Sevilla and Atletico have admired Palhinha for a while, however, the report claims whether they would be able to meet Sporting’s valuation.

Atletico are not prepared to pay a fee in excess of €25million (£21.4million), while Sevilla first have to sell before they can buy.

While Everton are interested, they are reported to be prioritising a move for Palhinha’s Sporting team-mate Matheus Nunes.

The Liga Nos oufit are keen to offer the defensive midfielder a new contract with improved terms and it would take a bid of around €40million (£34.3million) if they are to consider allowing him to leave.

Spurs are claimed to have made contact with Sporting to enquire about his availability but it does not state whether they will be looking to follow it up with an offer.

The defensive midfield options at Tottenham certainly need refreshing. Both Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks are not the ideal partner for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to shield the defence and the pair would benefit from a move away from N17 this summer to reinvigorate their respective careers.
