Report: Tottenham make last-gasp approach for Brazilian who has agreed transfer elsewhere

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking to swoop for Lille centre-back, Gabriel Magalhaes despite the young defender having already agreed a move to join Napoli.

Magalhaes has established himself has a regular in Christophe Galtier’s side this season and has gone from strength to strength over the course of the campaign.

The 22-year-old regularly wins more than his fair share of defensive duels, while also showcasing tremendous composure on the ball.

Spurs, Everton, and Arsenal were all linked with a move for the Brazilian during the January transfer window (Independent), with the Toffees being established as the favourites to land him this summer (Daily Mail).

Foot Mercato claim that Napoli already have a deal in principle in place for Magalhaes with Lille that is said to be worth around €22million (£20m) and have also agreed on personal terms of a five-year deal worth £35,000-a-week.

However, it is said that Tottenham have made an eleventh hour approach to try and tempt the player to North London.

Spurs Web Opinion

Magalhaes could potentially be a like for like replacement for Vertonghen since he is comfortable on the left-hand side of the central defence. He certainly seems to have the attributes to succeed in the Premier League but signing him on the back of one good season will be a risk.

However, his value might rise substantially if he has another good season next year, which might put him out of our reach. We similarly landed Davinson Sanchez on the back of just one good season in Europen football and that transfer has certainly ended up working out well for us.
