According to a new report from German publication BILD, Bayer Leverkusen may be forced to sell Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Piero Hincapie as the club looks to recover from what has been described as a crisis this season.
Leverkusen are currently sitting in 10th place in the Bundesliga table, a far cry from their third-place finish last year. They also crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages, losing out to FC Porto and Club Brugge in group B.
Hincapie joined Leverkusen in 2021 and has been one of the bright spots in the German team this term, impressing many across his 22 appearances at the heart of defence (Transfermarkt).
It is thought Tottenham are among the list of admirers for the 21-year-old and the North London side even reportedly made an offer of €25 million (£21.9m) for the player in January (BILD) but no move materialised at that time.
However, the player is expected to be one of Tottenham’s key targets in the summer (Football.London). Now, the latest reports out of Germany appear to suggest a transfer could be more likely than ever.
BILD talks of the “crisis season” Leverkusen have experienced this year and claims there are sure to be “consequences” come the summer. With the club set to miss out on European qualification, it looks like Leverkusen will undertake a “massive upheaval” at the end of the season.
The report claims that, while Hincapie is tied to a long contract, he is one of a handful of Leverkusen players who are being “hotly courted”, and it is believed he could be part of outgoings at the club which can help to raise “well over €100 million” to put towards a rebuild.
Spurs Web Opinion
If we can take advantage of Leverkusen’s poor season, then so be it. Hincapie is a great young player that Leverkusen will be sad to lose, but they will be well aware of his value and what selling him could help them achieve in a rebuild. We should definitely make this move happen.
