Report: Tottenham may have to pay out £52m to land centre-back target

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking at Sporting Lisbon centre-half Gonçalo Inácio again, but the North Londoners may have to pay out the player’s €60m (£52m) release clause to secure the signing.

The Lilywhites are on the lookout for a new centre-back as a priority in the January transfer window (Telegraph), with Ange Postecoglou keen to provide further depth to his backline in light of Micky van de Ven‘s injury.

As it stands, Jean-Clair Todibo would appear to be the prime target for that area, with Fabrizio Romano revealing Spurs had opened talks with the Frenchman’s current club, Nice.

Of course, it makes no sense to focus on one target and one target only, so there have been multiple names linked with Spurs over the last couple of months.

Are Spurs signing Goncalo Inacio?

One name that has popped up more recently is Goncalo Inacio, with the Portuguese defender thought to be on Tottenham’s radar (CaughtOffside).

Now, there is more information on the matter thanks to Portuguese outlet Jornal de Notícias (via Sport Witness), with a claim that Sporting Lisbon are desperate to keep hold of their star players in the winter window, meaning any club hoping to sign Inacio will have to spend big.

It is said that Tottenham are “coming back” for the player after reported interest in the past, as they look to compensate for van de Ven’s absence.

The only problem is, Sporting are expected to insist on Inacio’s release clause being met, meaning Spurs would need to pay roughly £52m to get their man.

The report adds that the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool are all keeping an eye on Inacio, while Record (via Sport Witness) claims Sporting are braced for bids in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

Inacio is a very good player, but he is not someone we should be spending £50m on, especially given he would be in a rotation with van de Ven and Cristian Romero. We should focus on getting Todibo through the door.
