Report: Tottenham open talks with first-team defender over new contract

Football Insider claim that Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Ryan Sessegnon over a new contract.

After impressing on loan at Hoffenheim last season, Sessegnon would have been hoping to make a breakthrough at Spurs this time out.

However, that has not proven to be the case, with the youngster’s campaign being once again interrupted by injuries.

Just when he was getting a run of consecutive starts under his belt in the left wing-back role a couple of months ago, the England Under-21 international went down with a hamstring problem.

The former Fulham man is now back to full fitness and will be hoping to have a strong finish to the season.

Football Insider have claimed that Conte has made it clear to the Spurs hierarchy that he believes Sessegnon is a ‘huge talent’ and could develop into a future Premier League star.

While the Spurs boss is said to be planning on revamping his defence in the summer, he wants the 21-year-old to remain in the squad.

Discussions are now thought to be underway over extending Sessegnon’s current deal, which runs until 2025.

If is true that Spurs are trying to extend Sessegnon’s contract despite the youngster having three years left on his deal, that shows how highly Conte and the club value him. That suggests that the Italian believes that the 21-year-old could make the left wing-back spot his own next season.
