Report: Tottenham planning to offer defender a new contract

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to offer Serge Aurier a new contract on the back of the right-back’s improved run of form.

The Ivorian has upped his game since the arrival of Matt Doherty from Wolves in the summer and appears to have established himself as Jose Mourinho’s first-choice at right-back.

The former PSG man is now arguably playing his best football since arriving at Tottenham three and a half years ago.

After the 27-year-old’s impressive performance against Arsenal last week, some Spurs fans on social media were calling for the club to reward him with a new contract.

It looks like the club has heeded that advice with Football Insider claiming that Daniel Levy is keensto get the defender to commit his future to the Lilywhites.

The report claims that with Aurier entering the final 18 months of his contact, the Tottenham chairman does not want a repeat of the Toby Alderweireld and Chrisitan Eriksen contract sagas of last year.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is fair to say that hardly any Spurs fan would have complained if Tottenham had sold Aurier in the summer. However, he certainly seems to have won the fan base over with his performances over the last couple of months. There is a case to be made that this is the first-time Aurier has genuine competition for his place since arriving at Spurs.

Pochettino always seemed to prefer Trippier ahead of Aurier irrespective of how badly the England international was playing, while the Ivorian was the only right-back at the club last season and knew that his place was guaranteed in the side. This is the first time there seems to be a meritocratic battle for his place in the side and Aurier has certainly responded.
