Report: Tottenham poised to make opening bid to sign attacking midfielder

Tottenham are preparing to make an opening bid to sign Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

Spurs are thought to be interested in signing Zaniolo with Antonio Conte keen on convincing the club’s hierarchy to push ahead with a transfer for the Italy international (TuttoJuve).

Tuttosport claim Spurs will soon accelerate their pursuit once they get a chance of evaluating the Italy international when they face Roma in Isreal for their final match of the pre-season period.

But Konur’s report comes after it was alleged Conte’s side have already had an opening offer turned down, which included £25 million plus defender Joe Rodon (CalcioMercato).

Coming off the back of a solid campaign, Zaniolo managed to rebound after a major knee injury ruled him out for the entirety of the 2020-21 season.

He emerged as a key player for Jose Mourinho during Roma’s Europa Conference League journey, tallying five goals and three assists (Transfermarkt) as they hoisted the inaugural trophy.

Despite his previous injury troubles, it is highly likely that Spurs will need to part ways with a decent amount of money as he is still so talented.

If they are to mount an opening bid, they need to at least test the waters to see where Roma stand in terms of their valuation before pushing further.
