Report: Tottenham prepared to sell first-team player after alleged bust-up

According to sources at Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to sell Emerson Royal after the defender was allegedly involved in a training ground bust-up.

Royal joined Tottenham last summer but has struggled to adapt to Antonio Conte’s system as a wing-back and has come in for criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Despite this, the Brazilian has featured 18 times this season already (Transfermarkt) with Conte seemingly preferring him over his other options of Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.

With the January transfer window just around the corner, it is widely believed that Tottenham will invest in a new right wing-back (90Min), meaning one of the three players fulfilling that role for the club now is likely to be sold.

90Min reported previously that Spurs would be keen to cash in on Royal, and it has been speculated that Inter Milan are interested in the player (CalcioMercato).

Apparently, the Italian giants failed in a bid to sign Royal previously and are keen to try again (Tuttosport 14/12/22 as relayed by Sport Witness).

Now, it appears Spurs will be prepared to offload the 23-year-old, and not just because of his performances on the pitch, as a reported dispute broke out in training.

Football Insider state that Royal had a “disagreement with a member of the first-team coaching staff.” It is not revealed who else was involved, and nothing has been confirmed by anyone at the club as to whether an incident even occurred.

It is assumed that this latest development will mean Royal is “now more likely to leave than Doherty, who is expected to stay in light of recent events.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Whether this is true or not, I don’t think there can be any future for Royal at Spurs. He’s just not right for our system and style of play, and it would be better for all parties to arrange a sale. Royal would be far more effective in a back four, so hopefully he can find a club to suit his skill set.
