Report: Tottenham pull plug on Gattuso deal following fan backlash

Tottenham Hotspur have decided against appointing Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach amid huge backlash from the club’s supporters, according to The Athletic.

Gattuso had emerged as the leading contender to succeed Jose Mourinho after reports emerged yesterday that the North Londoners had opened talks with the Italian after their plans to appoint Paulo Fonseca broke down (The Guardian).

Large sections of the Tottenham fanbase took to Twitter last night with the hashtag #NoToGattuso trending in the UK.

Opposition emerged after alleged controversial previous comments came to light once again by the former Fiorentina boss involving the role of women in football, same-sex marriage and racism.

Conversations had taken place between the club and Gatusso with Tottenham’s new managing director of football having been considering appointing him as Juventus’ new manager to succeed Andrea Pirlo earlier this summer.

Thankfully it appears the club have listened to the supporters in not appointing Gattuso. This is yet another chapter in the biggest PR mistake in Tottenham’s recent history.
