Report: Tottenham receive five-figure fine for moment against Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur have received a £20,000 fine for failing to control their players in the Premier League match against Newcastle United last week (Reuters).

Newcastle opened the scoring when Callum Wilson was sent through on goal in the first half, only for Hugo Lloris to beat him to the ball and collide with the striker. Wilson then lifted the ball into an empty net.

Despite replays clearly showing Lloris knocking the ball past the Magpies man, and Wilson extending his arm to block the Frenchman, the resulting goal was not chalked off by VAR.

The Tottenham players, including Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, were seen surrounding the referee to contest the decision, which has led to this £20,000 fine from the FA.

The FA statement read (Reuters): “Tottenham Hotspur FC admitted failing to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 31st minute, and also accepted the standard penalty.”

Spurs have not had much fun with VAR of late, with the technology also used to disallow a last-minute Harry Kane winner in the Champions League on Wednesday against Sporting Lisbon.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I really do not understand how it wasn’t given as a foul on Lloris. If Wilson had got there first, knocked it past Hugo, then collided with the keeper, it likely would have been a foul and a red card. VAR is not Tottenham’s friend at the moment.
