Tottenham Hotspur have been chasing Real Betis playmaker, Giovani Lo Celso, for some time now, with the BBC reporting a £53m bid near the start of the transfer window (BBC).

At the time, Real Betis turned the offer down as it was too far away from the player’s £88m buyout clause for their liking, but will they come to regret that decision.

Diario de Sevilla now claim that Spurs are back peddling and will no longer pay anything above €50m for the Argentine playmaker.

The Sun reported earlier this week that Spurs were close to agreeing a deal for the attacking midfielder for just £45m.

ABC reported that Lo Celso recently handed in a transfer request and that Real Betis still wanted €75m for their man.

Whatever the price for the Argentine, it appears that Spurs are simply not willing to overspend for him this summer.

If signed, Lo Celso would join his fellow countrymen Mauricio Pochettino, Juan Foyth, Erik Lamela, and Paulo Gazzaniga in North London.

  1. Pretending to try and sign a player is the Daniel Levy Backstop.

Seems to fool the fans and the coaching staff every year.

  2. This guy is a superb football player. He has all the talent in the world to become an attractive proposition for any team.
Dybala is also a top class player but if I had a choice I’d prefer Lo Celso for different reasons. I can understand Tottenham bargaining hard but he has put in a transfer request and I don’t see why Tottenham should hold a rigid 50m max position. If for instance they offered 60m in the end its likely Betis would agree? And for the extra 10m he’d be well worth it to the present squad Pochettino will have to select from. I can envisage Levy weeping at Alderweirld’s position and a real prospect of going for free next season and as Levy priced Eriksen so high no club would buy him, he stands to lose a fortune on Eriksen too.

If Tottenham give Arsenal a clear run with Kieran Tierney because they feel confident of getting Sessenon they are foolish in the extreme. They could get both to liven things up but Tierney is a real steal and a top class full back. Sessegnon is not. Tottenham’s major problem at present is at full back now and if Rose is expected to depart I can see that position along with goal keeping problems with potential of becoming medium to long term problems. Pochettino loves Lloris and well and good. He must also realize just how loss of confidence in that position can have an enormous effect on a team’s chances of success. Another area of concern is a replacement for Kane should he get injured or unavailable? He must have that addressed in his squad selection. The good news is there re some young players who look like they have the potential to make a breakthrough. Troy Parrot is a seriously talented football player at 17. I trust Pochettino to start dropping players who are not performing well enough to deserve their position on his teams. He has to do that this season.
