Report: Tottenham refuse to sell first-team star in January

The Daily Mail have reported that Tottenham are not willing to sell first-team centre-back Jan Vertonghen in January, despite Pochettino dropping him for the Liverpool match.

Spurs reportedly told an interested part, Inter Milan, that they would not consider offloading the Belgian defender in the new year, but his future remains unclear.

Vertonghen is currently set to leave the club on a free in the summer and can subsequently talk to non-English clubs in January about a pre-contract agreement.

Jan has been a first-choice player alongside Toby Alderweireld over the last few years, but has seen his form drop off dramatically this season.

However, it appears that the club are still keen on retaining his services for the rest of the season at least, and there is still the possibility of a new contract for the 32-year-old.

If Spurs let Vertonghen and Alderweireld leave on frees at the end of the season, they would be left with just Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth as senior first-team centre-backs, with the likes of Dier, Tanganga, and Carter-Vickers also available.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I am hoping that Jan improves his form enough to warrant a new deal, because losing Vertonghen, Alderweireld, and Eriksen on frees would be a huge financial hit to the Lilywhites.
