Report: Tottenham scouted 27-year-old goalkeeper at the World Cup

According to journalist Ben Jacobs on the Spurs Chat podcast, Tottenham Hotspur were scouting Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic at the 2022 World Cup.

Livakovic was one of the best goalkeepers on display in Qatar, helping his Croatia side to the semi-finals with heroics in two penalty shootouts. He saved two penalties in the knockout tie with Japan, and then saved another against Brazil in the quarter-finals.

He now has 41 caps for Croatia (Transfermarkt) and is firmly established as the number-one goalkeeper for the national team.

The Dinamo Zagreb star is one of the most highly-rated keepers outside of Europe’s elite leagues, and his performances at the World Cup certainly caught the eye of many. It is now suspected that he could be on the move in the future.

We know that Spurs are in the market for a new goalkeeper with a view to replacing Hugo Lloris (Evening Standard), as the 35-year-old’s time at the club appears to be almost at an end. This has been reinforced by the report claiming the club were keeping tabs on Livakovic in Qatar.

Jacobs said: “The final name that I would mention that Tottenham scouted during the World Cup, along with a few other clubs – one of them was Chelsea, one of them was Ajax – is the Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, who was unlucky not to be the goalkeeper of the tournament.”

According to journalist Ryan Taylor, Livakovic could be set to leave Zagreb in January, so whether Spurs make a move for him remains to be seen.

Spurs Web Opinion

I really like Dominik Livakovic, and he fits the bill perfectly of what we should be looking for in a successor to Hugo Lloris. He’s a big, commanding, confident keeper with lots of experience and appears to be all set for a big move now. I would be very happy if he ended up at Spurs.
