Report: Tottenham scouts have watched 20-year-old many times this season

CalcioMercato have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have sent their scouts to Italy on multiple occasions this season to watch Lecce midfielder Joan Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is having a breakthrough season at Lecce after joining the club on a free transfer last summer, with the midfielder having featured in all of the club’s 16 league games so far this season (Transfermarkt).

The versatile star, who can operate in defensive midfield, in a box-to-box role or further forward, was first mooted as a target for Spurs last month with Gazzetta dello Sport revealing that Spurs, West Ham United and Everton were all monitoring the player’s development.

The report claimed that Barcelona were already regretting their decision to let the La Masia graduate leave last summer and added that Lecce valued the 20-year-old at €15m (£12.9m).

CalcioMercato have now also reported on Tottenham’s interest in Gonzalez, stating that scouts from the North London club have been regular ‘guests’ at the Via del Mare this season to run the rule over the midfielder.

The report adds that Borussia Dortmund and Everton have also been scouting the Spaniard over recent months and that the youngster is also ‘liked very much’ by AC Milan.

This sounds like a typical Paratici target with an eye on the future rather than someone Conte is demanding to immediately strengthen the first team. The Spurs managing director could perhaps be considering his modus operandi of signing Gonzalez for a relatively cheap fee before he really explodes, and loaning him back out to Lecce.
