Report: Tottenham set to battle Newcastle for double transfer deal this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are set to fight it out with Newcastle United in the pursuit of both James Maddison and Harvey Barnes from Leicester City following their relegation from the Premier League.

Leicester City were unable to avoid the drop, despite beating West Ham on the final day of the season. Everton‘s win at Bournemouth condemned the Foxes to playing in the Championship next season.

Given their quality, it is widely expected that Maddison and Barnes will leave Leicester this summer and remain in the Premier League with new clubs.

Maddison had an impressive season despite his club’s troubles, and ended the campaign with ten goals and nine assists (Transfermarkt).

Barnes, a product of the Leicester academy, has been equally prolific, with 13 goals and one assist this year (Transfermarkt).

It has been suggested that Spurs will make a ‘huge push’ to sign Maddison this summer, as the player has been high up on their wishlist for a long time (Football Insider).

The same outlet reported Tottenham were keen on Maddison’s teammate, Barnes, too.

Now, the latest from The Sun suggests Spurs will face fierce competition from other clubs for the pair, most notably from Newcastle.

The report claims both players will “command fees of around £40 million” this summer.

It is believed Leicester are hoping a “bidding war” can help to increase that fee, though the club is thought to prefer “quicker sales” so they can begin their own rebuild this summer.

Other teams are expected to be involved in the race for the players, but at this stage, it is looking like Spurs and Newcastle are the ones “pushing hardest” for the signings.

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it will be a struggle to sign even one of these players, never mind both.

I cannot see us shelling out £80 million, even though both players are perfect for us.

If we get just one of them, I would be over the moon.
