Genoa want to re-sign Djed Spence from Tottenham

Several outlets over the last few weeks have reported that Genoa have begun talks with Tottenham over a deal to sign Spence.

This includes a report by Calciomercato on June 4, which stated that Genoa CEO Andres Blazquez had travelled to London to strike a deal with Spurs regarding the defender.

The outlet explained that the Serie A side did not want to meet the €10m (£8.5m) option to buy Spence in the loan agreement and were looking to sign the player on a discount.

It was explained that Blazquez is hopeful about agreeing to such a deal since he has a good relationship with Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy.

Loan-to-buy deal for Djed Spence to Genoa

Football Insider have now suggested that the two parties are close to reaching an agreement, with negotiations said to be at an ‘advanced’ stage.

Interestingly, it is revealed that the deal being struck will be a season-loan loan agreement with an option to buy for £7m, which will become an obligation if Spence makes a certain number of appearances for the Italian club next season.

The report adds that the right-back enjoyed his time at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium during the second half of last season and is now keen to seal the transfer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Ideally, this is not the sort of deal that Tottenham would have wanted as they would have preferred cash upfront.

However, given the amount of deadwood that the Lilywhites have to shift this summer, they would be keen to complete some sales swiftly.

Tottenham have previously made the mistake of loaning Bryan Gil out multiple times without any obligation of a purchase and all it has done is to drive down his valuation ahead of what is hopefully his departure this summer.

Antonio Conte was proven right when he said Spence as a ‘club’ signing rather than one he had on his own list, hopefully, lessons are made from this expensive mistake.
