Report: Tottenham star wants to remain at the club despite links to move away

Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the FA Cup on Wednesday night as Norwich City defeated the Lilywhites in North London via a penalty shootout.

Jan Vertonghen had put the side ahead in the first half but the Canaries bit back with just 15 minutes left on the clock.

Much had been written about Vertonghen this season, which is only natural as his contract is set to run out in the summer.

This means that the Belgian can currently talk to non-English teams about a pre-contract deal that would see him leave for free at the end of the season.

The Belgian centre-back has been at Spurs for eight seasons now, racking up a total of 310 appearances across all competitions and 12 goals (Wikipedia).

Despite being linked with potential moves to Inter Milan (CalcioMercato) or Napoli (Cosimo Silva via Area Napoli) of late, DH have now reported that Vertonghen is keen to remain at Spurs, hinting that a new deal is not being held up on his end.

Spurs Web Opinion:

The most I would offer Vertonghen is a one-year extension, but only if the board still intend to bring in his replacement early. If it is a choice between a new player and Jan then I think the Belgian is past his best.
