Report: Tottenham star withdraws from England squad

Sky Sports are reporting that Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has dropped out from the England squad for the Nations League matches next week.

Winks was one of three Tottenham stars, along with Harry Kane and Eric Dier, to be named by Gareth Southgate in the Three Lions squad to take on Iceland and Denmark.

The midfielder has been a regular in the last few England squads, having become a key cog in Tottenham’s midfield over the past two seasons.

Winks featured in Tottenham’s first pre-season friendly against Ipswich Town over a week ago and he got more than an hour under his belt, starting alongside new signing Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg.

However, the 24-year-old did not play any part in Spurs two subsequent friendlies Reading and Birmingham City, although there has been no official update from the club regarding any injury problems.

It has now been confirmed that Winks and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford have with withdrawn from the England squad, with Aston Villa star Jack Grealish being called up as a replacement.

This certainly does not sound positive, especially on the back of Winks not being involved in the recent friendlies. Hopefully, this is just a precautionary move and the midfielder does not have an injury serious enough to sideline him for the start of the campaign.
