Report: Tottenham ‘still want’ centre-back they failed to sign last year

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger continues to be on Tottenham’s transfer radar ahead of the January transfer window, The Daily Express have revealed.

According to reports, Tottenham made a last-ditch attempt to sign Rudiger in the summer of 2020 after their pursuit of Milan Skriniar collapsed but the Chelsea man decided to stay put at Stamford Bridge.

It was alleged at the time that Spurs made a loan offer for the centre-back which Chelsea accepted but the German international was not keen on making a temporary move to North London.

The 27-year-old has become a key player for the Blues since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard midway through last season but he is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract with the club.

The Express now report that, with Rudiger’s contract running out next summer, the centre-back will be free to talk to interested clubs from January.

Spurs are one of the clubs credited with an interest in the former Roma man while Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to be watching his situation closely.

The report claims that while talks between Rudiger and the club have ground to a halt for the moment, Tuchel is pushing hard for the club to resolve the contract differences.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Rudiger was to be available on a free transfer, I doubt he would want to join Spurs and hamper his Chelsea legacy. If he does not agree on a new deal with the Blues, I expect the 28-year-old to leave the Premier League.
