Report: Tottenham submit official proposal to change the way stadium is used

Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to increase the amount of non-football events taking place at their stadium just took a step forward, as an official application has now been sent to the local council for the changes to be authorised.

Since the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened its doors in 2019, it has quickly become one of the best and most financially successful venues in world football.

Spurs now rank eighth in the world when it comes to revenue streams (Deloitte), and a large part of that is down to the impressive returns from the stadium.

Regardless of the criticisms aimed at chairman Daniel Levy when it comes to footballing matters, there is no denying that he has done an impressive job in turning Tottenham into a commercial juggernaut in the last five years.

Details of Tottenham’s proposal revealed

The stadium currently hosts other events such as music concerts, NFL games, and boxing matches. It was suggested last month that there were plans in motion to increase the number of these non-football events from 16 a year, to 30 a year (Lilywhite Rose).

Now, it looks like those plans are moving forward. As per Football.London, the proposal for this change has now been submitted.

The proposal reads: “The event restrictions limit THFC’s growth plans and the ability to drive greater socio-economic benefits to the local economy. Allowing greater flexibility in terms of the number of events is crucial to enhance the stadium’s role as a multi-purpose and renowned music venue in London.

“The stadium has already become a prominent venue in London’s cultural and music landscape and hosting music concerts and other major events has become an important function of the stadium, but it must be given flexibility to grow. It is within this context that the club is applying to increase the number of major non-football events (MNFE) at the stadium from 16 to 30 per year.”

For anyone concerned about the impact this would have on the football side of things, the report adds: “It is important to note the club does not envisage hosting 30 events every year, not least as its ability to do so is partly dependent upon the number of football matches being played.”

This will mean more money through the gates and running into the club, which means an even stronger financial standing and even less chance of FFP penalties. But, we have to inject some of this revenue into the transfer kitty, or it’s all pointless.
