Report: Tottenham suffer set back in their pursuit of Serie A starlet

Among the areas that Tottenham need to strengthen in the summer, the priority has to be in the middle of the park where they have been short of numbers since the sale of Mousa Dembele to Guangzhou R&F.

With Christian Eriksen’s future also source for much speculation, Tottenham have been linked with several creative midfield players from across Europe.

In late April, the Daily Mail reported that Spurs were keen on adding Roma starlet Nicolo Zaniolo to their squad.

Zaniolo has had a fantastic breakthrough season at the Stadio Olimpico and has established himself as an important part of the Roma midfield.

The 19-year-old, who has found the back of the net 6 times this season, is considered to be one of the brightest young talents in the Serie A and is already a full international for Italy.

A report in Calcio Mercato claims that Tottenham’s scouts were in attendance for the game between Roma and Juventus last weekend to watch Zaniolo.

However, it looks like the midfielder wants to stay put in the Italian capital for the time being as another report in the same publication has now quoted the teenager as saying, “I still have another four years left of my contract, I see myself here in the future.

“Naturally receiving interest from other clubs is pleasing, but I am ready to sign the renewal because I am happy here. I would be happy to stay.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The is no doubt that Zaniolo is a major talent and Pochettino could be the right man to transform him into a top player.

At 19, naturally he is not keen to move away from a club where he is getting regular football but Roma are a club who generally let their players go if they receive a large offer and reinvest it into their squad. So, a move for Zaniolo certainly can’t be ruled out just yet.

We at Spurs Web believe, if Tottenham are not able to land Jack Grealish this summer, then they need to go all out for the Italian.
