Report: Tottenham target Bundesliga forward

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are reviewing a number of possible signings in January with Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta being one of the club’s primary targets.

Mauricio Pochettino is keen to add more athleticism and energy to his squad in order to play with more intensity and Mateta is one of the players the Argentine has reportedly identified to help with the transition.

The 22-year-old struck fourteen times for the Bundesliga side last season (transfermarkt.com) after moving from Lyon in the summer of 2018. The French under-21 international is known for his aerial prowess and his ability to hold up the ball.

With Spurs losing both Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen in the summer, Harry Kane is the only out and out centre forward at the club at present.

While great things are expected of Troy Parrott, 17-year-old has only appeared once for the first time in the recent Carabao Cup defeat to Colchester United.

Mateta will be a perfect signing for Spurs in January as he can offer the side a plan B which they have been missing since Llorente left. At just 22 years of age, the Frenchman also has a lot of potential for improvement. I believe Parrott will be better served being sent out on loan next season.
