Report: Tottenham target may not play again this season after club fallout

According to a report in La Repubblica (as relayed by CalcioMercato), Nicolo Zaniolo will not play again for AS Roma unless he apologises to his teammates and Jose Mourinho for his behaviour.

Zaniolo was heavily linked with a move to Spurs during the January window, with reports even indicating a couple of weeks ago that the Lilywhites were close to striking a deal with Roma for the 23-year-old (90 min).

However, the North London club ended up signing Arnaut Danjuma instead and despite Mourinho suggesting last week that he does not want to keep any players who do not want to be at the club  (Gazzetta), Zaniolo ended up staying put at the Stadio Olimpico.

La Repubblica have now revealed that the winger’s name and photos have been removed from the Roma locker room and that the player is no longer welcome at the club’s training ground.

In fact, it is said that he is not even welcome in the city of Rome anymore after receiving some threats from the fans.

It is explained that the only way back for Zaniolo is if he apologises and but the two sides are said to be ‘firm’ in their positions, with the situation described as ‘complicated’.

While it is impossible to comment on Zaniolo’s situation at Roma without fully understanding what went on behind the scenes, perhaps Paratici and Conte will be relieved that a potentially disruptive influence did not arrive at Spurs, on the back of these developments at Rome.
