Report: Tottenham the main contender for Real Madrid playmaker

Tottenham Hotspur may have gone 15 months without signing a single new player, but they could find themselves down another first-team star before the transfer window is up.

Spurs sold Mousa Dembele back in the January transfer window, but reports suggest that Christian Eriksen could also be on the way out as his contract enters its final year (Express).

If the Great Dane was to leave White Hart Lane, Spurs would have a tough job replacing him and his unique playmaker abilities.

However, one player who they have been linked to this week would be a like-for-like replacement for Eriksen, and could actually come from the club Eriksen is eventually sold to.

The Spurs midfielder has been touted to swap North London for Real Madrid (Express), but could Real’s Dani Ceballos be going the other way?

El Desmarque in Spain have reported that Spurs are now the main contenders for Ceballos, although the price could be a sticking point.

The report claims Spurs could pay up to £44m, while Madrid only paid 17 million Euros for Ceballos in 2017 (ESPN), and he has hardly lit the Bernabeu on fire.

Spurs Web Opinion:

It’s a no from me. For over £40m there are so many other and better replacements for Eriksen in my view. Donny Van de Beek and James Maddison spring to mind, and both are in far better form and play far more often than Dani Ceballos. I would be disappointed if Tottenham went for the Real Madrid flop.
