Report: Tottenham to make ‘big-money’ opening bid for defender this weekend

Tottenham are planning on submitting a bid to sign Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni this weekend, according to Football Insider.

Spurs are expected to build on their work under head coach Antonio Conte, having secured a place in the Champions League group stage.

The Italian coach is thought to have drawn up a list of key areas that need addressing in his squad with as many as six new signings in the club’s sights (Telegraph).

Of those, Bastoni is said to be a prime target for Conte who is keen on adding another left-sided centre-back to provide more depth alongside Ben Davies (Corriere dello Sport).

And Spurs could soon push forward with their attempts to sign the 23-year-old with Football Insider claiming the club could make a ‘big-money’ opening bid this weekend.

It is claimed Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici has learned of Inter’s financial issues and is keen to press on with acquiring Bastoni, to allow the club time to find a replacement.

If a deal were to materialise, it would see Bastoni secure a reunion in North London with Conte after he played under the 52-year-old for two seasons at Inter, where they won last season’s Serie A title.

The Italy international recently came off a 44-appearance campaign where he led the Nerazzurri to second in the table and the last 16 of the Champions League (Transfermarkt).

Bastoni could be one of the biggest names available on the market this summer and it may be worth moving early to complete a deal given that a solid replacement will be needed in his place.

It is also worth testing the waters early as Spurs are allegedly planning to do just to see where Inter currently stand in terms of their valuation of Bastoni and if there is any wiggle room.
