Report: Spurs ‘very interested’ in signing 26-year-old centre-back for just £18m

Earlier this week, a report from AS claimed that Tottenham had entered the race to sign Monaco defender Guillermo Maripan.

Maripan has enjoyed an excellent first season in Ligue 1 since joining from Deportivo Alaves last summer.

The Chilean international has looked commanding and composed on the ball in the heart of the Monaco defence and has arguably been up there with the best defenders in France this season.

Todo Fichajes have now reiterated the claims from AS, stating that Tottenham are in fact interested in the Monaco star this summer.

The report claims that Jose Mourinho is keen on bolstering his options in central defence and has identified Maripan as a target.

While AS previously reported that the defender could cost €25-30 million, Todo Fichajes assert that Monaco are prepared to let him leave for just around €20 million.

If it is true that Maripan is available for just €20 million, that does seem like great value for money. While the defender does look to have the necessary aerial and physical prowess to cope with the demands of the Premier League, signings from Ligue 1 are usually hit or miss and so there will be an element of risk involved.
