Report: Tottenham want to sign French international on loan this summer

According to Spanish publication Sport, Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet.

Lenglet has struggled to get consistent game time at the Camp Nou over the course of this season. Sport claim that the central defender is not in Xavi Hernandez’s plans for next season and that cashing in on him is a priority for Barcelona this summer.

The report states that Lenglet would be open to leaving the Catalan club in search of regular game time, with the defender needing minutes under his belt in order to make France’s World Cup squad.

Sport add that Antonio Conte has given the green light for the Lilywhites to push ahead and attempt to sign the 26-year-old.

It is explained that Spurs have asked Barca about the Frenchman’s situation but the North London club are allegedly only willing to sign Lenglet on a loan deal with an option to buy.

The Liga Liga giants are said to be open to loaning Lenglet out due to the difficulties they are facing in finding a buyer.

However, Barca are also thought to have sounded out other clubs regarding the former Sevilla man in order to see if they can get better terms.

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see why some Spurs fans might be underwhelmed by the idea of singing Lenglet. However, I believe that the Frenchman could potentially be a better fit for a back three than a back four, where he has sometimes been exposed.

If he is available on loan, then the transfer would represent next to no risk. Having said that, there is no doubt that there are better options out there for the left centre-back role like Alessandro Bastoni and Josko Gvardiol.
