Tottenham were close to £10.5m deal but have now backtracked – Journalist reports

According to journalist Gerard Romero (via Twitch 0n 03/05/23), Tottenham were on the verge of signing Clement Lenglet permanently not too long ago but the status of the move is no longer clear.

While Lenglet has delivered some decent performances since his loan switch last summer, the Frenchman has certainly not set the world alight, with Tottenham’s backline coming under plenty of criticism this season.

Despite this, there were some suggestions in the Spanish press last month that Spurs were in advanced negotiations with Barcelona to sign the 27-year-old permanently, with the Catalan giants said to be keen to get the centre-back off their wage bill (Sport).

Romero has now revealed the two clubs did indeed come close to striking a €12m (£10.5m) deal for Lenglet but the situation has now changed.

The journalist added that the status of the talks between Tottenham and Barca regarding the defender are now unknown.

It seems quite possible that Paratici was the man who was driving the negotiations and that Tottenham have halted talks temporarily following the Italian’s departure.

The club might not want to make a decision on Lenglet until they have a new director of football or head coach in place.
