Report: Tottenham were just ahead of Arsenal in one PL metric this season

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur had the highest success rate from corner kicks across the Premier League in 2022-23.

Some eyebrows might have been raised when Spurs hired Gianni Vio as their set-piece coach last summer but the numbers now suggest that the Italian’s methods have certainly had the desired effect this season.

That perhaps explains why Vio has stayed on at the club even though Antonio Conte‘s entire coaching staff have departed North London.

The Athletic reveal that Tottenham and Arsenal have the joint most goals from corner kicks in 2022-23, with 13 goals each.

However, the Gunners won more corners than Spurs, which means that the Lilywhites have the highest success rate, with 6.4 per cent of their corners finding the back of the net.

Tottenham just beat out Brentford, who converted with 6.1 per cent of their corners across the 2022-23 season.

In contrast, Brighton had the least success of the 20 Premier League teams, with only 1.7 per cent of their corner kicks ending up in the net.

Spurs Web Opinion

The other important point that The Athletic article discusses is the fact that the 2022-23 season had more goals from corners across the Premier League than any season since 2010-11.

That suggests that teams are now increasingly working on set pieces as they see it as a potential point of difference.
