Report: Tottenham ‘were willing’ to meet club’s demands for Spanish striker

The Times have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur were willing to meet Atletico Madrid’s demands for Alvaro Morata late in the transfer window.

Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancour were Tottenham’s only two new additions during the January window, with both signings being announced on transfer deadline day.

The Daily Mirror backed Spurs to make a deadline day approach for Morata but Fabrizio Romano later revealed that the striker had decided to see out the remainder of his loan spell at Juventus.

The Times have now revealed that Antonio Conte’s men did accelerate talks with Atletico over a deal for the former Chelsea striker.

The report claims Tottenham were willing to accept Atletico’s demands of a guaranteed fee for Morata but the Lilywhites were ‘unable to persuade’ the 29-year-old to join.

It is also daid that Arsenal were also interested in Morata and the Spaniard was willing to move to the Emirates on an 18-month loan deal.

However, it is suggested that Atletico’s insistence on a mandatory purchase option scuppered the striker’s proposed move to the Emirates.

I suspect Morata was not too keen on coming to Spurs and playing second fiddle to Harry Kane. On the other hand, he would have been guaranteed to be the first choice at Arsenal due to Aubameyang’s departure, which is probably why he was open to a move to the Emirates.
