Report: Tottenham will battle to sign striker but not likely until the summer

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be involved in the race to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney, but any club wanting to secure the services of the England attacker may have to wait until the end of the season.

Since losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer, Tottenham have been linked with a whole host of different forwards who could fill the England captain’s boots.

Ange Postecoglou opted not to replace Kane immediately, however, with only young striker Alejo Veliz coming through the door this summer.

Instead, Postecoglou has relied on his new captain, Heung-min Son, to lead the line. Son has done an incredible job, too, with eight goals in his first 11 league games this season (Transfermarkt).

While the Lilywhites have a few options in attack, there’s no doubt that a more substantial centre-forward will need to be added to the squad at some point.

Will Ivan Toney move in January?

Spurs have long been linked with Ivan Toney, who is currently serving a ban until January for breaking the FA’s gambling rules. As one of the most prolific marksmen in the Premier League, Toney is hot property, and a number of top clubs are keen on signing him from Brentford.

Now, sources at Football Insider have revealed Tottenham are still in the race to sign Toney, along with Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United. But, any club wanting to snap Toney up will likely have to wait for the summer.

That’s because any deal is thought to be “hard to do” due to Brentford’s asking price of £70m. It is now thought a “move in the summer could be best for all parties.”

For Toney, the main focus is believed to be simply returning to regular football action.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would love us to sign Ivan Toney, but I just don’t see it happening. Arsenal are desperate for a striker and will be willing to outbid Spurs to get him, while Chelsea have the money to throw at Toney, too. We will likely get priced out of the move, sadly.
