Report: Tottenham will have to pay £34m to sign centre-back target this summer

According to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur would have to pay €40m (£34.1m) if they wish to sign Alessandro Buongiorno from Torino this summer.

Buongiorno, who has emerged as one of the most consistent centre-backs across Serie A over the last two years, is now thought to be on the radar of several big clubs in Italy and England.

It was reported by Calciomercato last week that Tottenham had ‘initiated contact’ with Torino to understand how much the centre-back would cost while AC Milan and Napoli had also shown keen interest in the 24-year-old.

It was subsequently suggested by La Repubblica (via TuttoJuve) that Ange Postecoglou’s men are ‘in the front row’ to sign the Italy international and have been ‘moving under the radar for a few months now’.

However, a couple of days ago, The Sun claimed that Tottenham could face competition from London rivals, Chelsea, who were also said to be admirers of the centre-back.

Torino want a big fee for Alessandro Buongiorno

Corriere have now said that Torino have no intention of letting Buongiorno leave on the cheap this summer.

The outlet discusses Napoli’s move for the defender and explains that last season’s Serie A winners are now pushing forward with a move for the versatile centre-back.

However, it is revealed that Torino have told the Napoli hierarchy that they need to pay €40m (£34.1m) for Buongiorno, which the publication terms as a ‘remarkable’ price.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not sure if Tottenham would want to get into a bidding war for Buongiorno and end up paying close to £35m or more for him, given that the Lilywhites are only essentially in the market for a fourth-choice centre-back.
