Report: Tottenham’s indecision led to them missing out on 25-year-old

Italian publication Il Mattino have claimed that Tottenham could have signed Kim Min-Jae a couple of years ago, only for indecision inside the club lead to them missing out on the defender.

Kim was mooted to be a target for the Lilywhites as far back as the summer of 2020 (90 Min) when he was still at Beijing Guoan, and the South Korean was once again reported to have been keen on a switch to the north London club this summer (AreaNapoli).

However, it was Napoli who won the race to sign the 25-year-old from Turkish outfit Fenerbahce. The centre back has enjoyed a brilliant start to life in Italian football, with his solid displays at the back being one of the key reasons why Luciano Spalletti’s men are sitting three points clear at the top of the Serie A table.

Il Mattino now look back on how the centre-back escaped the clutches of both Spurs and Lazio, and ended up in Naples instead.

The report explains that Tottenham wanted Kim when he was at Beijing Guoan and that the player ‘excited’ the club’s scouts at the time.

However, it is said that someone at the borth London club ‘kept shaking their head’, which suggests that not all at N17 were convinced about the South Korean.

Spurs Web Opinion

In the defence of Tottenham’s recruitment department, it is very difficult to judge how a player will do in the Premier League based on his performances in the Chinese or the Turkish league.

I can understand why Spurs hesitated but there is no doubt that the north Londoners will be kicking themselves after seeing how solid and composed Kim has looked in Serie A.
