Report: ‘Strong’ Tottenham interest in midfielder has led to contract ‘impasse’

Record have now revealed that discussions between Sporting Lisbon and Manuel Ugarte over a new deal have now stalled amidst Tottenham’s interest in the midfielder.

Ugarte has been one of Sporting’s most consistent performers this season, with Antonio Conte’s men getting a close look at the youngster in their two Champions League clashes against the Portuguese club earlier in the campaign.

A Bola were the first to report a few months ago that Lilywhites had been impressed with the 21-year-old’s solid displays and were closely monitoring his development.

Spanish publication Sport revealed a couple of weeks ago that Spurs could face competition from Barcelona for Ugarte, with the Catalan giants also said to be keen on snapping up the youngster.

Record have now become the latest publication to report on Spurs’ pursuit of the Uruguayan, stating that the North London club’s interest in the midfielder is ‘getting stronger’.

The publication adds that Tottenham’s desire to sign Ugarte has led to ‘an impasse’ in the contract talks between the player and Sporting.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the way Sporting conducted themselves during the negotiations over Pedro Porro, I do not think the Spurs hierarchy will be particularly keen to do business with the Portuguese club anytime soon.

With Ugarte’s current deal running until 2026, he certainly will not come cheap this summer.
